Kevin Feige Reveals Marvel Has ‘No Immediate Plans’ for Its Release
In a recent interview, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige revealed some disappointing news for fans hoping to see Eternals 2 released in theaters soon. The prospective film would be a sequel to the 2021 MCU movie Eternals, directed by Academy-Award-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao. Although Eternals received lukewarm reviews and performed below expectations at the box office, the film’s fans have been hopeful for a sequel since the original’s release. However, Feige’s recent comments cast doubt on the sequel’s chances.
Kevin Feige confirms Eternals 2’s development status
While speaking to Inverse, Feige offered important updates about Eternals 2’s development status and the likelihood of its release. Like many other Marvel projects, Eternals has both a mid-credits scene and a post-credits scene, with the former introducing new characters and setting up a prospective sequel. However given what Feige has said, fans may have to wait a while longer before seeing these plot threads or characters again, if they are seen again at all.
“There are no immediate plans for Eternals 2,” Feige said to Inverse. “There are, and I think you’ve seen maybe in a trailer we’ve released recently, an acknowledgment of some of those events. Certain giant things came out of the ocean.”
The trailer that Feige refers to while talking about the prospect of Eternals 2 is the recently released teaser trailer for Captain America: Brave New World. It promises that the film will take the audience back to Tiamut Island, which was created when the titular group of superheroes turned the emerging Celestial Tiamut into stone during the climactic final battle in Eternals.
Why Eternals 2 is not a priority for Marvel
Eternals has a 47{e4fde47aac1ae89bf29a738865fe54795955cdfa0720535d5449f21447854535} approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes after 417 reviews and made $402.1 million at the global box office against a $236.2 million budget. These are relatively lackluster numbers for an MCU project. As a result, even though the mid-credits scene for the first movie introduced Harry Styles’ Eros / Starfox and Patton Oswalt’s Pip the Troll, presumably for a sequel, releasing Eternals 2 is not a priority for Marvel.
