Les Baux – WE magazine for women
Les Baux
by Wendy VanHatten
When you approach the perched outcropping known as Les Baux, you will see the reason Les Baux-de-Provence has always given its inhabitants great views. Once at the top you can see for miles in every direction.
Les Baux has been a site that’s been continuously inhabited from prehistoric times to now. In fact, the name baux means escarpment.
Sadly, few archaeological remains still exist in the deep valleys and steep sided plateaus. Once this was a thriving farming and trading community, well into Roman times. When transportation routes developed, Les Baus became important in mining and quarrying.
Definitely worth a visit and a trip through the village to the top of the massive plateau. Take some time to explore life as it was in this historic village.
If You Go: Les Baux is located about 45 minutes south of Avignon.
