Taking to her Instagram account, Lupita shared a video of herself speaking to her fans while on a hike.
“I have a confession to make. I have never voted,” she said, explaining, “Not because I haven’t wanted to, but because I’ve never been eligible. I’ve been in the wrong country at the wrong time. But this year marks the first time that I’m going to be able to vote, and I can’t believe I get to vote for a Black woman.”
In the accompanying caption, she confirmed that she was voting “for THE VERY FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE in the US election this year!”
Why hasn’t she voted before? She explained – “Historically, while I have been eligible to vote in my home country, Kenya, I have not been able to participate from abroad (the country does not accommodate absentee voting).”
“But this November 5, 2024, I will VOTE as a new American citizen, and I am very excited and honored to exercise that right. That makes me a Virgin Voter,” Lupita continued. She spoke to other virgin voters, urging them to take steps to head to the polls.
Lupita concluded with a message to people who have voted before: “And for the experienced voters out there 📣, please share your wisdom. Take us virgin voters with you to the polls because…we’re not going back!! 🩵”
Earlier this week, Lupita shared a touching tribute to her Black Panther costar Chadwick Boseman on the anniversary of his death.
